GABIER’N’RIGS, at the service of all boats

Nearly 30 years ago, in 1997, David Penard decided to settle in Antibes. After having sailed the seas and oceans of the world, David put down roots. David has sailed all the oceans: 18 years in Asia working on shipyards in Singapore, Cochin, Tianjin, Fukuoka, and San Diego in 1988 with the Il Moro de Venezia, before returning home for a stint in Busan, South Korea.

Our fully equipped workshops—including a splicing workshop, a leather workshop, a hydraulic workshop, and mechanical and manual swaging equipment—allow us to work with precision and efficiency. All our tools are mobile, ensuring rapid on-site response.

  • Splicing: the best way to transfer a load; a rope’s resistance is primarily measured by the strength of its splices.
  • Methods: redesigning and adaptation of traditional methods using modern materials.
  • Production: all ropework is made by hand by a crew of passionate craftsmen, using only high-quality products.

Textile standing rigging by GABIER’N’RIGS

  • Use of textiles: lighter, quieter and allows modernization of traditional ropework.
  • Maintenance:
    • Thoroughly rinse to remove salt.
    • Avoid chemicals (e.g., deck cleaning).
    • Disassembly and storage away from light recommended.
    • Following the care instructions for halyards, sheets, and lacing can double the lifetime of textiles.

ROD

  • Composed of bars terminated by hydraulic clamping, forming a “flat-headed mushroom.”
  • Primary load: concentrated on the sides of the flat head.
  • Recommended inspection: every 50,000-60,000 miles or every 5-6 years.
  • Maintenance :
    • A split head can be repaired by reusing the length from the threaded rods.
    • Release the ROD rigging during winter storage to allow the heads to breathe.
  • Large sailing ships and superyachts frequently travel 20,000-40,000 miles/year, which can lead to component fatigue.
  • Inspection: regular checks of the entire mast and rigging, taking photos of visits for follow-up.

  • Traditional cables: 7×7 Stainless steal or 7×7 Galvanized (galvanized for marine environments).
